“All misery and pain come from attachment”. These words of Swami Vivekananda are indeed true. Most of our pain is because of our attachment to the material world. Being born a human it is very obvious to get close to the things and people surrounding our daily lives. We find ourselves in a bond with many things at a time, whether material, non-material or living and non-living.
The root of our attachments is purely psychological. Yes, sometimes we might think that we are physically attached to something, but in reality, that very thought of our fondness first strikes our mind which awakens our physical desire for that person or thing.
Now keeping aside human attachment for the materials, for the time being, I am trying to understand ” the essence of love in attachment ” in a human to human relationship.
Many a time, while reading the works of different philosophers, I have come across this notion that love and attachment are distinctively different from each other.
While attachment is regarded as something which is self – centered, possessive, time bounded and most importantly, nothing but in search of another person.
Whereas, love is considered by many, as pure, selfless, timeless and free.
But don’t you think love without attachments is something inevitable?
I think so.
Love can only be healthy and secure when there are some kinds of bond in it, in the name of vows attached to it, hence love cannot be free. Love can only become the union of two souls when one places oneself into it with their soulmates, and so, love cannot be selfless.
Love can only become a timeless epic when it happens within a time frame, and love can only become hard when we go through the difficulties of attachment.
Love without attachments and attachments without love are “self-love”. Only, when love and attachment tenderly get entwined with each other, then we get the true essence of a relationship.
